Configure Ports for Remote Access

Applies To: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2

An RRAS server treats the installed networking equipment as a series of devices and ports. A device represents hardware or software that can create physical or logical point-to-point connections. A port is a communication channel that can support a single point-to-point connection. You configure the types and number of ports used by RRAS by using the Ports Properties dialog box.

Note

If you enable VPN access when you install RRAS by using the RRAS Setup Wizard, then the VPN ports are already enabled for remote access connections. If you enable VPN access later, then the ports are likely disabled and you must enable them by using this procedure.

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

To configure ports for remote access

  1. Open the Routing and Remote Access MMC snap-in.

  2. In the navigation pane, expand your RRAS server.

  3. In the navigation pane, right-click Ports, and then click Properties.

  4. In the Ports Properties dialog box, click a device, and then click Configure.

  5. In the Configure Device dialog box, do one or more of the following:

    • To enable remote access, select Remote access connections (inbound only).

    • To enable demand-dial routing, select Demand-dial routing connections (inbound and outbound).
