Migrate an Office 2010 KMS host

You can migrate your Microsoft Office 2010 Key Management Services (KMS) host to another server after you deploy Microsoft Office 2010. Migrating the Office 2010 KMS host might be necessary if topology changes are made to the network. This article explains how to perform the migration.

Note

This information applies to volume-licensed editions of Office 2010. It does not apply to Office Professional Plus for Office 365, which is licensed through subscription.

To migrate an Office 2010 KMS host

  1. Uninstall the Office 2010 KMS host key by running the following command:
    cscript C:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /upk bfe7a195-4f8f-4f0b-a622-cf13c7d16864

  2. Delete the record from the Domain Name System (DNS):

    1. Open the DNS console.

    2. Expand the _tcp node under domain.com.

    3. Delete the _VLMCS record.

    After you do this, the Office 2010 KMS host is uninstalled.

  3. On the Microsoft Office 2010 KMS Host License Pack (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkID=169244) website, download and then run KeyManagementServiceHost.exe on the new server. You are then prompted to enter the product key, and the Office 2010 KMS host will try to become activated. If the activation fails, do the following:

    1. On the new server, re-install the product key for the Office 2010 KMS host by running the following command:
      cscript C:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /ipk [ProductKey]

    2. Activate the Office 2010 KMS host by running the following command:
      cscript C:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /ato bfe7a195-4f8f-4f0b-a622-cf13c7d16864

  4. After activation is complete, restart the Software Licensing Service and verify in the DNS that the record is created for the new KMS host server.

  5. To verify that the Office 2010 KMS host is configured correctly, check the KMS activation request count to see whether it is increasing. On the KMS host, the current count is displayed when you run the following command:
    cscript C:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /dlv bfe7a195-4f8f-4f0b-a622-cf13c7d16864

    You can also check the Key Management Service log in the Applications and Services Logs folder, which is where activation requests from KMS clients are recorded, for the 12290 events. Each event displays the name of the computer and the time-stamp of the activation request.
