Silverlight has a Bright Future
At our PDC conference last month Bob Muglia, President of the Microsoft Server and Tools Division talked about the great work we are doing with Silverlight and discussed it’s future. Because Bob explained that we support the development of a standard for HTML5 and are actively including it as part of IE9 some members of the press jumped to the conclusion that the statement indicated that Silverlight was somehow dead. In fact nothing could be farther from the truth. According to Bob:
-
- Silverlight is very important and strategic to Microsoft.
- We’re working hard on the next release of Silverlight, and it will continue to be cross-browser and cross-platform, and run on Windows and Mac.
- Silverlight is a core application development platform for Windows, and it’s the development platform for Windows Phone.

We know that you are betting your businesses, futures and careers on what we say and do and we all get that. Whenever the press over-reacts like this we consider it our duty to calm things down a bit and have everyone take a realistic look at the situation and then assess it . We take this responsibility very seriously.
Also, all of the keynote and breakout sessions at PDC were streamed live and recorded for on-demand viewing. If you haven't seen them you can find them at https://microsoftpdc.com. You can download high-def video and slide decks from there. A couple of really good Silverlight sessions to watch are:
