DRM Definitions (Windows CE 5.0)
When working with WMC/Windows Media DRM 10 for Network Devices, there are several important terms that you should understand:
- Authorization
The user authorizes the device from the WMC UI. The device can then see the content list, and play unprotected content. More information on the process of Authorization can be found in the documentation for the Media Query Engine in the topic Authorization and Registration. - Registration
If the device is authorized, the device can register itself with the server, using a certificate and serial number. This step allows the device to play protected content. More information on the process of Registration can also be found in the documentation for the Media Query Engine in the topic Authorization and Registration. - Proximity detection
Proximity detection measures the latency between Windows Media Connect and an NMD. If the latency is short enough, then the NMD is considered to be near the transmitter. The transmitter will not send any content to an NMD unless it is near. This restricts distribution of protected content to within the home network. - Receiving a Policy
A policy is sent to a registered or revalidated NMD when it requests content from a Windows Media Connect. - Data transfer
Data transfer between a Windows Media Connect and NMD is performed after policy rights have been sent by the Windows Media Connect and enforced by the NMD. The control protocol handles the data transfer procedure; therefore, both the request and response messages must be specifically defined for the control protocol and content type.
