Creating a Domain by Using Windows 2000 Server (Windows CE 5.0)

When setting up your 802.1x network, you must first specify a domain name and promote your server to domain controller. For information about how to perform these steps, see the Windows 2000 Server Help.

The steps of this process are written with the following assumptions:

  • You have installed Windows 2000 Server and Service Pack 3 or later on TESTSERVER.
  • You have Administrator rights to configure your server.
  • You have obtained the Media Access Control (MAC) address for each of the four access points. To obtain the MAC address for your access points, consult the product-specific documentation.

To create a parent domain

  1. From Control Panel, choose Add/Remove Programs, and then choose Add/Remove Windows Components.

    The Windows Components Wizard appears.

  2. On the Windows 2000 Components page perform the following steps:

    1. Add Internet Information Services
    2. Double-click Network Services, and then add the following:
    • Domain Name System (DNS)
    • Internet Authentication Service (IAS)
    • Windows Internet Name Service (WINS)

Note   While you are installing these components, if a warning appears asking you to set the static IP addresses for WINS Server and DNS Server, choose OK. In the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box choose Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and then choose Properties. The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box appears. Choose Use the following IP Address, and then set the following values.

    Item Value
    IP address 10.11.0.1
    Subnet mask 255.255.0.0
    Default gateway 10.11.0.1
    Preferred DNS server 10.11.0.1
    1. Choose OK, and then, to close the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box, choose OK again.
  3. Complete the Windows 2000 Server Setup Wizard, and then restart your computer.

  4. Perform one of the following steps:

    • From the Windows 2000 Configure Your Server window, choose Active Directory, and then launch the Active Directory Installation Wizard.

      - or -

    • Or, if the Windows 2000 Configure Your Server window does not appear choose Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then choose Configure Your Server.

  5. In the Active Directory Installation Wizard, complete the following required steps to make the server a domain controller:

    1. Choose Domain controller for a new domain.
    2. Choose Create a new domain tree.
    3. Choose Create a new forest of domain trees.
    4. In the Full DNS name for new domain box, type TESTDOMAIN.local.
    5. In the Domain NetBIOS name box, type TESTDOMAIN.
    6. Leave the default database, log location, and shared system volume. At the message asking you to confirm your DNS configuration, choose OK.
    7. On the Configure DNS page, choose the Yes, install and configure DNS on this computer (recommended), and then choose Next.
    8. On the Permissions page, leave the default user and group permissions, and then choose Next.
    9. On the Directory Services Restore Mode Administrator Password page, specify the administrator password, and then choose Next.
    10. To complete the Active Directory Installation Wizard, on the Summary page, choose Next, and then choose Finish.
    11. To restart your computer, choose Restart Now.
  6. Launch Active Directory Domains and Trusts from Administrative Tools, and then verify that your new domain is listed at the top of the tree hierarchy.
