RMS/MIP Information: Office for Mac Logging Locations

Introduction

Office 2016/19/365 for Mac supports IRM functionality with both AD RMS (on premises) and Azure Information Protection (AIP) (formerly known as Azure RMS). When troubleshooting RMS issues on an Office for Mac client there are some default logs generated automatically. 

For MacOS 11.x or 12.x

  • ULS logs: ~/Library/Containers/Microsoft <App>/Data/Library/Logs
  • MIP logs: ~/Library/Containers/Microsoft <App>/Data/Library/Logs/MSRightsManagement/MSProtection_log.txt 
  • Policy: ~/Library/Containers/Microsoft <App>/Data/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/CLP/*

For MacOS 10.15.x

  • ULS logs: ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.<APP>/Data/Library/Logs
  • MIP logs: ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.<APP>/Data/Library/Logs/MSRightsManagement/MSProtection_log.txt 
  • Policy: ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.<App>/Data/Library/Application\ Support/Microsoft/Office/CLP/*

Other Legacy Version Log Locations

These locations start around build 16.41.

Versions of Office for Mac written with the MIP SDK (versions 16.21.0 - 16.40) have a new log file that should be reviewed.
