Changing Network Profile in Windows 8.1
If you have been using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you may noticed in Network and Sharing Center for each networks you would have a network profile which is Home, Work or Public and you could switch between them. However in Windows 8.1, it is a bit different and as you may already noticed, you have Public and Private network and you could not click and switch between them using Network and Sharing Center, because there is no link there. However, there is an easy way to switch between Public and Private network using Change PC settings. If you open start and search for PC Settings or open Charm (swipe right edge or move mouse to right corners) and click or tap on Settings, and then click or tap Change PC settings and then click or tap Network, Connections, and then tap or click the network connection which you are using, you could see a menu Find devices and content and you could turn it off or on. When you turn it on, you network will change to Private and when it is off, your network change to Public. You should turn it off or set network to Public when you are connecting to public or untrusted networks and you want to have the limit or no sharing. The menu is something look like the following:
Sometimes, after visiting the Connection menu and click on your connection, you won’t see Find devices and content (above image), it happens if you are not login as administrator and you should check and make sure you have been logged in as administrator. If you are logged in as administrator and you won’t see the above menu, then User Account Control (UAC) is high level and won’t grand you permission. In this case, open Start and search for User Account Control or UAC and reduce level to default level (if it is in higher level) which is Default - Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer and press okay and then open Connection setting again and you should be able to see Find devices and content . If Change PC settings is already open when you try to make changes to your UAC, then it is recommended to close and reopen it. Later on you could change UAC to its default level.
