Heligoland

If I had to pick my #1 favourite album of all time, Blue Lines by Massive Attack would be a real contender. It’d probably be between that and The Joshua Tree but I have a sneaky suspicion that Blue Lines would win out. I remember a DJ I knew back when I was about 17 telling me that I’d not like the album as it was a bit unusual. By that I think he either misunderstood my musical taste or hadn’t quite grasped just how amazing and seminal this album would become. In the early days it was a cult album selling for at least £15 against most other CD’s of the time at £10-£12. At some point it became more widely appreciated and I can only assume a tonne were produced as it dropped in to the £8 range at HMV and was always part of their big sale. For me, Blue Lines will always remind me of my 2nd year of university at Loughborough as we played it incessantly and often when driving out to Nottingham for a night at Venus.

Whilst Protection was a solid album and Mezzanine had a couple of great tracks in Angel and Teadrop, the boys from Bristol never really hit the heights of Blue Lines as Mushroom left and they went through various other projects. Finally, their latest studio album, Heligoland, is with us and I’m still getting in to it. What I can say is it’s not Blue Lines and I suppose expecting it to be was always going to lead to disappointment. There are some lovely tracks on there though – with Paradise Circus perhaps the pick of them. It features vocals from Hope Sandoval

Heligoland is growing on me. Glad to have the Bristol boys back to the top of my playlist.

Side notes: a few facts I found when researching this post that I wasn’t previously aware of are that Blue Lines was heavily backed by Neneh Cherry (of the awesome Buffalo Stance) and the truly beautiful genius of Unfinished Sympathy was recorded at Abbey Road Studios. Oh and Massive Attack are on Twitter of course but also Tweater

Oh and finally, go take a listen to Hymn of the Big Wheel if you’ve never heard it. Really just an amazing track.
