Why on Earth can't I charge my camera by USB?

Whilst traveling it's great that all my other devices can charge from my laptop - is it matter amps?

    Ken> I can see the convienience of using AA or AAA batteries though I can also see that using fixed sized batteries could increase the size of the camera. Having said that AA and AAA batteries CAN be charged by USB :-)

    I have wondered this too.  I have a Canon Ixus 55 and would love it to charge via USB.  I have managed to find USB charging for everything I carry except this.

    and why is most camera dont use regular AA battery?  if i out of battery, i just buy some AA almost at any store!
