This SP2 update covers both Planning and Monitoring Server as well as the client tools; Planning Business Modeler, the Add-In for Excel, and Dashboard designer.

There are a several things I think you should be aware of when upgrading to PerformancePoint Server SP2:

1. If you're going to use SQL Server 2008 as your database, you'll need to update all your PerformancePoint server and client machines (Except Planning Business Modeler clients) with SQL Server 2005 Cumulative Update 9. This is available by online by request only. (Our installation documentation explains this here: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd335969.aspx

2. If you are currently running PerformancePoint Server version 3.0.3999.1 or a later version, you will receive an error when you try to upgrade to Service Pack 2 (SP2). This is true if you have SP1 installed or if you have SP2 beta installed. In order to successfully install SP2, you will have to install a Planning database utility. The utility can be found here: https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ed5fdc77-0134-4292-8786-29deef5bdd9a. After installing the utility, you will be able to upgrade to SP2. A future QFE will fix this issue.

3. There are now three scenarios documented for using the SP2 upgrade:

Scenario 1: Update PerformancePoint Server with SP2 only

In this scenario, PerformancePoint Planning and Monitoring Servers are updated to SP2 without altering the existing SQL Server 2005 environment. SP2 is installed on all computers hosting PerformancePoint Planning and Monitoring components and services, including client computers hosting PerformancePoint Planning Business Modeler and the PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel. For this scenario, follow the instructions in these articles:

  1. Update Planning Server with Service Pack 2

  2. Update Monitoring Server with Service Pack 2

Scenario 2: Update SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 and update PerformancePoint Server to SP2

In this scenario, SQL Server 2005 is updated to SQL Server 2008. SQL Server 2005 Cumulative Update 9 (CU9) is applied to all computers hosting PerformancePoint Server components and services, including client computers hosting PerformancePoint Planning Business Modeler and the PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel. CU9 is also installed on computers hosting SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services. Service Pack 2 is installed on all computers hosting PerformancePoint Planning and Monitoring Server components and services, including Planning Business Modeler and the PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel. For this scenario, follow the instructions in these articles:

1. Update SQL Server 2005 client components with Cumulative Update 9

2. Upgrade SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 with PerformancePoint Planning Server

3. Upgrade SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 with PerformancePoint Monitoring Server

4. Update Planning Server with Service Pack 2

5. Update Monitoring Server with Service Pack 2

Scenario 3: Install PerformancePoint Server RTM and SQL Server 2008 in a new environment and update PerformancePoint Server to SP2

In this scenario, SQL Server 2008 is installed on newly configured computers. SQL Server Cumulative Update 9 (CU9) is applied to all computers hosting PerformancePoint Server components and services including client computers hosting PerformancePoint Planning Business Modeler and the PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel. CU9 is also installed on computers hosting SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services. PerformancePoint Planning and Monitoring Servers are installed to a newly configured computer or computers. Service Pack 2 is installed on all computers hosting PerformancePoint Planning and Monitoring Server components and services including Planning Business Modeler and the PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel. For this scenario, follow the instructions in these articles:

1. Update SQL Server 2005 client components with Cumulative Update 9

2. Install PerformancePoint Planning Server with SQL Server 2008

3. Install PerformancePoint Monitoring Server with SQL Server 2008

4. Update Planning Server with Service Pack 2

5. Update Monitoring Server with Service Pack 2

That's all I've got for now. Enjoy the added features and updates that come with SP2.

Cheers!
