MS07-058 and Windows 2003 SP1
Hi All,
Over the past 3 weeks we have been monitoring any potential issues with the October patches. MS07-058 introduced a regression that has affected a very limited number of customers, but I wanted to bring it to your attention. Below are the details of the regression and ways to mitigate any issues.
Regression
The regression is only on Windows Server 2003 SP1. Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 SP2 are not affected.
Symptom
Running IIS under heavy load doing asynchronous RPC over HTTP, W3WP.exe would lead to a crash in IIS. This issue is visible in a channel recycling scenario with more than 4GB of data over the channel. IIS would need to be restarted manually. A channel is a communication pipe. Under certain conditions such as a time-out, the server invalidates a channel and the client then needs to close that channel and open a new one. This is channel recycling.
Fixes/Workarounds
Install the hotfix from KB917781 either before or after MS07-058 – install order isn’t important - This needs to be requested via your normal support channels. An alternative is to upgrade to Windows 2003 SP2 (permanent) or uninstall MS07-058 (temporary).
The KB article will be update soon detailing this.
