Driving Architecture in Agile Projects using Use Cases and Visual Studio 2010

A challenge facing any team hoping to become more agile is how to make sure that the architecture of the system being built gets the right level of attention. This presentation shows how, with a little care and correct emphasis, use cases and Visual Studio 2010 provide a solution for Agile teams – one that isn’t just agile but that also provides a balanced approach for working with the architecture of the system. A demonstration of a VSTS 2010 process template supporting the approach will be demonstrated.

Architect Certification

Architects are becoming increasingly valued by organisations and are intimate in making technology and strategy decisions. The International Association of Software Architects (IASA) has been representing the interests of IT Architects for over 7 years now and has invested heavily in developing an architectural recognition system that looks beyond the flavours of technologies or frameworks to the professional behind. this session will introduce and discuss the relative merits of IASA certification from foundation to master.

The Consultant’s Toolbox : 5 Great Tips for Architects

We all have them. Little tricks that are picked up after many years of experience. Come share and discuss with a Microsoft Services’ Principal Application Development Consultant what you have found invaluable in your day to day work as an architect. Josh Twist, BCS & Computing Magazine’s System Developer of the Year, will let you in on top advice based on years of industry-based solution architecture experience. Find out what, why and when to use each nugget for the best effect.

In the Trenches : Architecting for the Real World

Come to this session to hear leading Application Development Consultants relate their experience working with architects on a myriad of complex projects. Find out how they got it right the first time, when they didn’t and why or what worked when recovering from tough challenges. Bring your own challenges and discuss tested methods to resolve them.

Operational Intelligence (OI)

Business operations are typically becoming increasingly complex and as the under-lying applications and IT platforms federate transactions through multiple systems and applications. Businesses are increasingly interested in how proactive application platforms which have intelligence to correlate event streams in real-time and take business actions or execute business processes to react in real-time to respond to business events, or detect patterns and take corrective actions. This session will look at how the world of complex-event-processing, ESB/SOA and cloud service-bus are formed into the new enterprise architecture landscape and explore how ‘OI’ platforms will allow as business to further automate, self-correct and reach new levels of agility.

Moving from physical to virtual to dynamic to cloud Neil Sanderson,

Virtualisation in all its new and emergent forms offer great benefits from lowering costs while increasing agility. But is this proving to be the case? Or are we just moving the problem, a spaghetti in the physical world could easily be a spaghetti in the virtual one, and what happens when we look to the cloud? This will be an interactive round table mind sharing discussion, exploring experiences and challenges, pitfalls and successes in succeeding in a virtual world.

Extending the reach of Visual Studio TFS

Most large systems do on exist on a single platform or ecosystem; application components must interoperate to match the needs of modern business. This can cause problems for development teams where their language requirements mean that it is hard for them to find common tooling. This is particularly true in mixed Java .NET solutions. This problem can be addressed by using the Teamprise tools, these allow Java developers, using Eclipse, to access all the features of Team Foundation Server with as much ease as a .NET developers inside Visual Studio.

Platform Modernisation

Organizations have spent millions of dollars in building and maintaining large software systems over a period of 10-15 years. Improving value of these software assets is one of the critical business goals for these organizations. During this session, we will outline how to modernize these assets in order to achieve one or more of the following business goals: • Reduce development, sustaining engineering, and/or operational cost of these assets • Increase software agility, thereby decreasing time to introduce new features • Increase revenue through scalability and new features • Increase longevity of the assets – investment protection.

Organisational Intelligence

Most enterprises are faced with demands and opportunities for deploying the latest smart technologies and social networking tools, both internally and externally. But fancy software won't achieve its potential for business benefit without an architectural framework. Proper and coordinated use of these tools can result in significant improvements in the ability of the organization to detect and interpret changes in the environment, to respond decisively and appropriately to these signals, and learn rapidly from new experience. These are all signs of organizational intelligence. The challenge is to deploy innovative technologies and working practices that will enhance the collective intelligence of the enterprise. * A systematic framework for understanding and coordinating the strategic requirements for new working practices, supported by a collaborative working platform * How to integrate these tools into the business process * How to link these capabilities to the strategic goals and objectives of the enterprise
