VSTS and the Platforms Magic Quadrant

Over the last few months I’ve been sharing updates about VSTS 2008 and 2010, most recently sharing the new UI for VS 2010.  Today I wanted to mention that leading analyst firm Gartner has positioned Microsoft in the Leaders Quadrant of its Software Change and Configuration management for Distributed Platforms Magic Quadrant.  And, on a related note, they also recognized Microsoft with a Positive rating in their December MarketScope for Application Life Cycle Management.  These are recognitions that I’m proud of, and happy to share.

I think this news demonstrates that VSTS is rapidly maturing in the marketplace since its introduction in 2005.  Our goal has been to deliver an integrated story that allows you to quickly create high-quality business applications in team environments.  VSTS 2008 is a great platform for ALM and if you’re not already using it, check it out!

    A piece of advice: instead of repeating endlessly that Gartner wrote this and that in some report (which noone believies in), focus on MVPs, developer user groups, INETA and PASS. They are your clients and agents. They will buy or start initiatives to buy VS products. They are your customers. They will lobby the management and their companies to buy products, not reports. For management, this is just another $$$ piece of software they do not understand. Reports such as this, which do not aim at your clients (those listed above), are fine as... A piece of paper. But they will not drive sales nor customer satisfaction.

    Hi Jason, after 5 years developing sites and web applications with PHP, I've now reached a point where I would to venture into asp.net and I guess the best way would be to install a tryal version of VSTS 2k8; but I was wondering if there were any limitations with the tryal version. How long is the tryal period? Thanks. (My live id is treigh)

    Hi Treigh - Glad to hear you are interested in trying out ASP.NET!   The easiest way to get started is to use the Web Platform Installer from this site: http://www.microsoft.com/express/download/  (“Microsoft Web Platform”) This tool will give you all the software you might want including Visual Studio Web Developer (VWD, which can also be downloaded on the same page).  All of the software you download from this site is free and will not expire (registration is required after the trial period, but there is no charge to register). A great source of help is on www.asp.net which has videos, tutorials, and other things to get you started.  ScottGu also just posted a complete walk through of building an MVC application from scratch including a database and live maps in case you are interested in trying it out (http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2009/04/01/asp-net-mvc-1-0.aspx). VS Professional edition will then offer more tools and features should you be interested in continuing down this route. Good luck!

    Jason, In the "leaders" quadrant is excellent, but the positioning relative to other vendors does indicate that there is still work to be done (I believe VS-2010 will move VSTS "up and to the right" significantly). Please KEEP posting reference material such as this. As an ISV (developing on many platforms), A consultant, and an MVP; having this reference material is critical to having solid backinging when I end up "in the board room" of many of my clients.

    Can you provide more info abt whats new coming in 2010. I havn't seen a new post after you have recently blog abt new UI in 2010.
