IE 9.0.5 Available via Windows Update

The February 2012 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer is now available via Windows Update. This security update resolves 5 privately reported vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer. The most severe vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user visits a specially crafted Web page using Internet Explorer. An attacker who successfully exploited any of these vulnerabilities could gain the same user rights as the local user.Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less affected than users who operate with administrative user rights.

This security update is rated Critical for Internet Explorer Windows Clients, except IE6 client, where it is rated Moderate; and Moderate for Internet Explorer on Windows servers, except IE6, where it is not rated. For more information, see the full bulletin.

Most customers have enabled automatic updating and do not need to take any action. We recommend that customers, who have not enabled automatic updating, enable it (Start Menu, type “Windows Update”). We recommend that administrators, enterprise installations, and end users who want to install this security update manually, apply the update immediately using update management software or by checking for updates using the Microsoft Update service.

    Hi,
  1. Is this a new release or an update ? I mean when i'm doing a windows 7 reference image, do I have to install ie9 then apply this updates or this one is enough ?
  2. If not, does this updates superseeds previous IE9 updates ?

Why don't you add any new HTML5 features in the update? What's the reason for that?

New html5 features are not added because this is just a security update... and so users are not left confused that some features work in some versions of IE9 but not others. This should be obvious. Anyway, when can we expect a platform preview for IE10 that works on Windows 7?

I'd like to see a comment on your intentions or not to start supporting the -webkit prefix as Mozilla and Opera are considering doing. Let's get some dialog going about that.

You would 'go to chrome' (which updates itself even more silently) but when ie8 upgrades itself to ie9.. thats a different story? ..IE team, you need to hide the IE version number and implement silent upgrades, users wont notice and wont kick up needless fuss. (ala chrome, firefox)

@Arieta It should be already obvious that they aren't intending on releasing an IE10 platform preview for Windows 7 as it would undermine their (albeit futile) effort to have us upgrade to Windows 8, upon release.

Why don't IE updates include performance improvements and other minor enhancements?  In the year since IE9 came out, the other browsers have been enhancing rapidly and leap-frogging IE9.  Once-a-year releases (or longer) are too long when it comes to the rapidly evolving world of the web.

@Keller, @pmbAustin You can find IE9 add-ons by searching on Google/Bing such as; webtablab.com/.../best-ie9-addons If you are software developer, you can create your own add-ons using .NET framework or SpiceIE framework: www.codeproject.com/.../Extending-Explorer-with-Band-Objects-using-NET-and archive.msdn.microsoft.com/SpicIE

When/IF will you push our performance updates to IE9 to keep up with Chrome?
