Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter Tool to convert your VMware VMs to Hyper-V VMs (Beta Available)

I know that a large percentage of Microsoft customers are using VMware as their primary virtualization platform today.  I also believe a good percentage of these customers are using Hyper-V as a secondary hypervisor in lab, test and possibly lower impact production environments.  In fact, I had one such customer recently ask me if there was an “easy” way to get a few of their production VMs running on VMware “exported” and “imported into Hyper-V in their lab so they could do some application upgrade testing.

With System Center 2012 and Virtual Machine Manager, we do have a way to do this, but that isn’t free.  The good news is we are indeed working on a FREE tool to help address this need from our customers.  The Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter (MVMC) tool is in beta now and can be found on our Connect site here: https://connect.microsoft.com/site14/InvitationUse.aspx?ProgramID=7594&InvitationID=MVMC-PK9Q-BR47.

The Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter Tool:

  • Provides a quick, low-risk option for VMware customers to evaluate Hyper-V
  • Converts VMware VMs, virtual disks and configuration, (memory, virtual processor, etc.) from the source to Hyper-V
  • Uninstalls the VMware tools on the source VM and installs the Hyper-V Integration Services as appropriate
  • Includes an easy-to-use wizard-driven GUI simplifying VM conversion

The current MVMC Beta supports converting virtual machines created with:

  • VMware vSphere 4.1
  • VMware vSphere 5.0

To virtual machines for:

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Hyper-V
  • Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1

The team is working to include support for Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V as well, but that is not in the beta tool today.
