Azure Internet Of Things (IOT) Suite

Introduction

Microsoft announced the Azure IOT Suite recently at AzureCon. This is a brief foray into getting started with the Azure IOT Suite. IOT is many things that spans a wide breadth of activities from device origin configuration for data gathering and eventual assimilation of the data by a capable infrastructure to gain intelligent insights into the data for generating business value. Every day there are hundreds of devices around us, that emit dumb data. The task of IOT is to convert this seemingly boring and useless data point into valuable business opportunity.

Getting Started

To begin go to the Azure IOT site and sign in with your Azure Account credentials. This will open up your ability to use pre-existing solutions.

Solution Choices

You will be presented with two solutions. Currently only the “remote monitoring” solution is available.

Choose that and enter the details. Sample screen shown below. The interesting thing to note is the wide array os services being used within the Azure IOT suite.

It will take a while as a slew of services are being provisioned, but at the end your solution will then be provisioned.

Your solution dashboard is your window into your ITO suite.

Set of resources

The following is the set of resources that are created under a single resource group for you.

Now that a device has been created you can set commands and or alarms for the device.

The addition of alarms and commands are fairly straightforward. Since here we are simulating a temperature device, the data points are for temperature and humidity.

Now you can see the data flow for your device in the dashboard (this is shown below)

Conclusion

This is a very simple example of using IOT and adding devices into your ITO solution and gathering telemetry data and analyzing the data and taking intelligent actions on the data. After all the value of IOT is in getting to “gaining insights” into actionable information to better our environment.
