Information Rights Management (IRM): There was a problem when trying to find the enterprise Rights Management Services (RMS) server

We had a data migration project where we had to migrate the data from Documentum to SharePoint. During content uploading (documents) to the Document Library an error used to get logged in ULS logs with  the below details:

"Information Rights Management (IRM): There was a problem when trying to find the enterprise Rights Management Services (RMS) server. There was no enterprise server registered. Additional Data Service Type: 1 Error value: 0x509fd0"

On analysis I found that whenever we try to upload a document which is rights-protected this exception gets raised in spite of document getting uploaded successfully. On uploading Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 tries to access the Rights Management Server and if it is not able to connect to the Server the exception gets logged into the ULS log file.

To check IRM settings in Central Administration

  1. In Central Administration, on the top navigation bar, click Operations.

  2. On the Operations page, in the Security Configuration section, click Information Rights Management.

  3. On the Information Rights Management page, perform one of the following steps:

    • If the RMS server in Active Directory, verify that Use the default RMS server specified in Active Directory is selected.

    • If you are manually specifying the location of the RMS server, verify that Use this RMS server is selected and that the URL specified for the RMS server that you want to use is correct.

Once the IRM configuration is done this error gets resolved.
