Head Tracking using a Wii Remote
How often do you get an e-mail where somebody says "this is cool" and provides a link to a web site or a video? "Yea, yea, it’s probably cool but I’ve got work to do" is my usual response. However, the other day I noticed at the bottom of a "cool" e-mail that the link was titled Head Tracking for Desktop VR Displays using the Wii Remote. Having worked in a previous life on projects with head tracking and VR applicability, I had to check it out.
Well, I did find the video cool. But even better, at the end of his video, Johnny Chung Lee provides a link to his web site at CMU. His site includes details for this and other Wii remote projects which are not only written in C# and use DirectX but also use a Wiimote managed library developed by a Microsoft MVP.
I imagine that some of these projects might make an interesting addition to an embedded application. Just how much time have we all spent staring at a non-descript print at mall gift store trying the get the 3-D image to "pop?" Now, image the size of the crowd your kiosk would attract if you could offer 3-D display capability.<grin>
