Redaction add-in for Word 2003

This isn't a post on XML or the file formats, but I just saw this and wanted to link to it. Just the other day a tool was posted that allows you to do redaction on a Word document. For those of you not familiar with "redaction", it's essentially taking a document that has sensitive information and black lining those sensitive pieces of data so that the document can be released. The trick is to make it so that the document itself maintains the same layout (otherwise you could just simply delete the sensitive text). I've seen a number of tools out there that try to do this by drawing black lines over the content, but anyone can still access the text underneath if they know how to read the file format. In this solution the content really is removed. Here is a little blurb describing the tool:

The Microsoft Office Word 2003 Redaction Add-in makes it easy for you to mark sections of a document for redaction. You can then redact the document so that the sections you specified are blacked out. You can either print the redacted document or use it electronically.

Sensitive government documents, confidential legal documents, insurance contracts, and other sensitive documents are often redacted before being made available to the public. With the Word 2003 Redaction Add-in, users of Microsoft Office Word 2003 now have an effective, user-friendly tool to help them redact confidential text in Word documents.

I always love these kind of tools because they show how extensible the applications are. In this case we have a group in Microsoft building solutions on top of Office. There are also a ton of great 3rd party tools that build on top of Office. The new file formats are going to make it even easier to build solutions that do really powerful and more vertically focused solutions.

    Brian - do you know of any detailed technical info, tests or independent reviews (or source code?;) regarding this feature's implementation or usage? This is obviously a much-needed add-on, but those of us who might want to use it need to know that it doesn't have any hidden surprises and that all redacted text has been completely excised from the file (unlike in the Calipari case!).

    If I have a version of Microsoft Word which is older than 2003 version, can I still use Redaction Add-in tool?

    Ok. As this is a blog for Office 2007 and my comment is about it, I will take advantage that it treats about Word 2003 that is also involved.
    I have used for two years or so the Reader add in for Word 2003 that allows me to see my letters or writings in Microsoft Reader.
    Recently, I have downloaded Office 2007 and I have been testing it with results in the top ten percentile, that is, excelent result. However, I keep on working on Word 2003.
    I had to reinstall my Office 2003 and also to reinstall my WordRMR file to have the Reader add in in Word 2003. I understood clearly that WordRMR is a tool for Word 2003.
    However, when I opened Word from Office 2007 release Beta 2, I was surprised that Word RMR had installed the add-in tool there also.
    However, sigh, it does not work allright because it send a message when finishing the process about Palm programs not supported. As Word RMR is a program for laptops and Palms, I prefer to let you know this issue to be pointes iun the future.
    I am a Reader user who will not be very happy to have to wait for the Reader add in tool for Word when Office 2007 final version will be finally released.

    This add-in is for Word 2003 only, but another one for Word 2007 is in the works...
