Nyala font family

Overview

The Nyala typeface is named for the mountain nyala (tragelaphus buxtoni) a species of great African antelope native to the highlands of Ethiopia.

This typeface was designed for Microsoft by John Hudson of Tiro Typeworks, and is based on initial drawings by Geraldine Wade. The Ethopic glyphs conform to the stylistic norms of typical text faces, but are lighter and more open than most Ethiopic types, making Nyala better suited to screen readability. A Latin typeface was also designed expressly to harmonise with the style and proportions of Ethiopic syllabics.
