XmlWriter.WriteEndElement Method

Microsoft Silverlight will reach end of support after October 2021. Learn more.

When overridden in a derived class, closes one element and pops the corresponding namespace scope.

Namespace:  System.Xml
Assembly:  System.Xml (in System.Xml.dll)

Syntax

'Declaration
Public MustOverride Sub WriteEndElement
public abstract void WriteEndElement()

Exceptions

Exception Condition
InvalidOperationException

This results in an invalid XML document.

Remarks

If the element contains no content, a short end tag "/>" is written; otherwise, a full end tag is written.

NoteNote:

When you use the XmlWriter methods to output XML, the elements and attributes will not be written until you call the Close method.

Examples

Dim settings As New XmlWriterSettings()
settings.OmitXmlDeclaration = True
Dim sw As New StringWriter()

Using writer As XmlWriter = XmlWriter.Create(sw, settings)
    writer.WriteStartElement("book")
    writer.WriteElementString("price", "19.95")
    writer.WriteEndElement()
    writer.Flush()
End Using

OutputTextBlock.Text = sw.ToString()

XmlWriterSettings settings = new XmlWriterSettings();
settings.OmitXmlDeclaration = true;
StringWriter sw = new StringWriter();

using (XmlWriter writer = XmlWriter.Create(sw, settings))
{
    writer.WriteStartElement("book");
    writer.WriteElementString("price", "19.95");
    writer.WriteEndElement();
    writer.Flush();
}

OutputTextBlock.Text = sw.ToString();
