Repair email programs and Microsoft Exchange Server services

Applies To: Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard

Problem   One or more of the following programs are not working:

  • Your email program (Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Web Access (OWA), or another email program).

  • Features that depend on Microsoft Exchange Server services, such as Fax, SharePoint Alerts, FSRM alerts, and system health email reports.

Solution   Verify that Exchange Server services are set to automatic and are running.

To verify that Exchange Server services are set to automatic and are running

  1. Log on to the server that is running Windows SBS 2011 Standard.

  2. Click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click Services.

  3. On the User Account Control page, click Continue.

  4. Verify that the following services are set to automatic and are running:

    • Microsoft Exchange Active Directory Topology

    • Microsoft Exchange Address Book

    • Microsoft Exchange Anti-spam Update

    • Microsoft Exchange EdgeSync

    • Microsoft Exchange File Distribution

    • Microsoft Exchange Forms-Based Authentication Service

    • Microsoft Exchange Information Store

    • Microsoft Exchange Mail Submission

    • Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Assistants

    • Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Replication

    • Microsoft Exchange Protected Service Host

    • Microsoft Exchange Replication

    • Microsoft Exchange RPC Client Access

    • Microsoft Exchange Search Indexer

    • Microsoft Exchange Service Host

    • Microsoft Exchange System Attendant

    • Microsoft Exchange Throttling

    • Microsoft Exchange Transport

    • Microsoft Exchange Transport Log Search

  5. If any service is not set to Automatic, double-click the service name, change the Startup type to Automatic, and then click OK.

  6. If any service is not running, right-click the service name, and then click Start.

  7. If a service does not start, start the Event Viewer to view the event log for that service as follows:

    • Click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click Event Viewer.

    • On the User Account Control page, click Continue.

    • Click Windows Logs, and then click Application.

    • In Actions, click Filter Current Log.

    • Click the Event sources drop-down menu, click the service or services that did not start, and then click OK.

    • In the Application list, double-click the error to view Event Properties.

      There might be sufficient information in the Event Properties dialog to help you repair the problem. If there is not sufficient information, visit the Microsoft Support website.

Problem   Internet email or internal email is not working.

Solution   If you received Non-Delivery Report (NDR) email messages, review them for status codes, which provide information about how to fix the problem. If NDRs are unavailable, run the Fix My Network Wizard to diagnose and fix the problem. If there are still issues, run the Exchange Server Best Practices Analyzer.

To run the Fix My Network Wizard

  1. Log on to the server that is running Windows SBS 2011 Standard.

  2. In the Windows SBS Console, click Network, and then click Connectivity.

  3. In Tasks, click Fix my network, and then complete the wizard.

To run the Exchange Server 2010 Best Practices Analyzer

  1. Log on to the server that is running Windows SBS 2011 Standard.

  2. Click Start, click All Programs, click Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, and then click Exchange Management Console.

  3. On the User Account Control page, click Continue.

  4. Expand the Microsoft Exchange On-Premises node, click Toolbox, and then double-click Best Practices Analyzer.

  5. Click Select options for a new scan.

  6. In Active Directory Server name, type the name of your server that is running Windows SBS 2011 Standard.

  7. Click Connect to the Active Directory server, and then click Health Check as the type of scan to perform.

  8. Click Start scanning, and then, when the scan is complete, view the report.
