Maintaining updates

Updated: March 10, 2009

Applies To: Windows SBS 2008

You can use the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) snap-in to do advanced update management.

Accessing the Windows Server Update Services snap-in

Note

You must be a network administrator to complete this procedure.

To use the Windows Server Update Services snap-in

  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Microsoft Windows Server Update Services 3.0 SP1.

  2. On the User Account Control page, click Continue.

  3. Review the reporting and configuration items in the navigation pane.

Note

The number of updates that are reported in WSUS significantly differ from the number reported in Windows SBS 2008 Update Services. Windows SBS 2008 Update Services lists updates for computers that are joined to the Windows SBS 2008 domain, which is a subset of the updates WSUS lists.

Removing out-of-date updates

Over time, the amount of WSUS metadata and update files can grow considerably. It is highly recommended, on a monthly basis, that you run the WSUS Server Cleanup Wizard to remove out-of-date, unused, and expired update files to recover disk space. The wizard removes the following update files:

  • Unused updates and update revisions

  • Computers that are no longer contacting the WSUS server

  • Unneeded updates

  • Expired updates

  • Superseded updates

Note

You must be a network administrator to complete this procedure.

To run the Server Cleanup Wizard

  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Microsoft Windows Server Update Services 3.0 SP1.

  2. On the User Account Control page, click Continue.

  3. In the navigation pane, click Options. In the details pane, click Server Cleanup Wizard.

  4. Select the items to clean up (all items are recommended), and then complete the wizard.

For more information about the Server Cleanup Wizard, see the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=137008).
