Add or Edit Notification Thresholds

Notification thresholds specify the quota limit, level of usage, and how notifications are generated when usage exceeds the defined levels. Windows SBS 2008 sets the following default notification levels:

• Notification threshold warning is set to 85%.

• Notifications are generated once every 24 hours, and they can be found in the daily report.

Note

If Exchange Server is not installed, e-mail notifications are not sent.

• An e-mail is automatically sent to the Network Administrator when the quota is exceeded.

You can make changes to the default threshold notifications in the File Server Resource Manager (FSRM). The FSRM can send e-mail messages to administrators and specific users, log an event, run a command or a script, or generate reports.

To add or edit default threshold notifications

1. Open the Microsoft File Server Resources Manager (FSRM). (To open the FSRM, click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click File Server Resource Manager).

2. In the navigation pane, click Quota Management, and then click Quotas.

3. In the results pane, click the quota path where you want to view or change the properties.

4. In the Actions pane, click Edit Quota Properties.

5. For information about each of the properties in the dialog box, see the Threshold Properties section. When you finish, click OK to save your changes.

E-mail Message tab

Item	Details
Generate notifications when usage reaches (%)	Enter the percentage of quota usage for the volume or folder.
Send e-mail to the following administrators	Select this check box to send an e-mail to the network administrator when the threshold is reached. Type the e-mail address in the text box of the network administrator who should receive the e-mail notifications.
Send e-mail to the user who exceeded the threshold	Select this check box to send an e-mail to the account that the user was logged in to at the time the threshold was reached.
Subject	Write the subject for the e-mail that is automatically sent when the threshold limit is exceeded.
Message body	Write the message body of the e-mail that is automatically sent when the threshold limit is exceeded.
Select variable to insert in your text	Select variables to insert into the subject or body of the e-mail message that is generated. To add a variable to the e-mail subject or body, place the cursor where you want to add the variable, select the variable in the list, and then click Insert Variable.
Additional e-mail headers	Enter additional e-mail addresses and other e-mail options. To add or edit additional e-mail addresses and variables, click Additional e-mail headers, type the requested information in the text boxes, and then click OK.

Event Log tab

Send warning to event log	Select this check box to send a warning to the event log when the threshold is reached. Note Windows SBS 2008 automatically generates a notification once every 24 hours for each quota threshold that is exceeded. To view the notifications, in the Windows SBS Console, click the Reports tab, click Detailed Network Report, and then click Server Event Logs.
Log entry	Type the text for the event log in the Log entry text box.
Select variable to insert in your text	Select variables to insert into the event log that is generated. To add a variable to the event log, place the cursor where you want to add the variable, select the variable in the list box, and then click Insert Variable.

Command tab

Item	Details
Run this command or script	Select this check box to run a command (or script) when the threshold is reached. Type the path of the command (or click Browse to search for the path).
Command arguments	Type the arguments for the command in the Command arguments text box (if required). Command arguments may include variables that are used on the E-mail Message tab and Event Log tab.
Working directory	Opens the Command Working Directory dialog box, which enables you to specify the directory in which the command should run.
Command security	Specify the security level that is used to run the command.

Report tab

Item	Details
Generate reports	Select this check box to generate reports when the threshold is reached. Note The reports that you configure are not displayed on the Reports tab in the Windows SBS Console. You can find these reports at %systemdrive%\StorageReports\Incident.
Select reports to generate	Lists the reports that are available to generate. Select the check box adjacent to each report that you want to generate.
Review Selected Reports	Opens the Review Selected Reports dialog box, which summarizes the parameters and values for the selected reports.
Send reports to the following administrators	Select this check box to send reports in an e-mail message when the threshold is reached. Enter the e-mail address of the network administrator who should receive the reports.
Send reports to the user who exceeded the threshold	Select this check box to send reports in an e-mail message to the account that the user was logged in to at the time the threshold was reached.
