What is an extranet or private site?

Updated: August 21, 2008

Applies To: Windows SBS 2008

An extranet, or private site (called a Business Applications Web site in Office Live), is similar to private network that uses the Internet to share business information with suppliers, vendors, partners, customers, and other businesses. You can think of an extranet as part of your intranet, which is extended to users outside of your organization and is accessible from the Internet. An extranet Web site provides a way for teams to share files, folders, and resources and to easily work together on documents with people who are not using the local computer network.
