Rename a client computer

To rename a computer that is running Windows Vista
On the client computer, click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, double-click System. The System Control Panel appears.
In the Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings section, click Change settings. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
On the Computer Name tab, click Change.
In the Computer name text box, delete the old computer name, type a new computer name, and then click OK.
If your computer is part of a domain, you are prompted to provide the name and password of a user account that has permissions to rename the computer.
Restart the computer.
To rename a computer that is running Windows XP
On the client computer, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, double-click System. The System Properties page appears.
On the Computer Name tab, click Change. The Computer Name Changes dialog box appears.
In the Computer name text box, delete the old computer name, type a new computer name, and then click OK.
If your computer is part of a domain, you are prompted to provide the name and password of a user account that has permissions to rename the computer.
Restart the computer.
