Establish a direct infrared network connection between computers

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

To establish a direct infrared network connection between computers

Open Network Connections.
Double-click New Connection Wizard, and then click Next.
In Network Connection Type, click Advanced connection, and then click Next.
In Advanced Connection Options, click Connect directly to another computer, and then click Next.
In Host or Guest, specify whether this computer is the host or the guest by doing one of the following:
- If this computer has information that will be accessed by another computer, click Host.
- If this computer is being used to access information on another computer, click Guest.
Click Next, and then do one of the following:
- If you specified this computer as a host, in Devices for this connection, select Infrared Port, click Next, and then follow the instructions in the remaining wizard pages.
- If you specified this computer as a guest, in Connection Name, type the name of the computer that you want to access, and then click Next. In Select a device, select Infrared Port, click Next, and then follow the instructions in the remaining wizard pages.
  
  To complete the connection, in the Connect connection type dialog box, type your user name and password, and then click Connect.

Notes

Performing this task does not require you to have administrative credentials. Therefore, as a security best practice, consider performing this task as a user without administrative credentials.
To open Network Connections, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.
In the Windows Server 2003 family, only Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition, supports infrared networking.
To examine or change properties for this connection, right-click its icon in Network Connections.
After you add an infrared device, you may have to restart the computer before you can select Infrared Port in step six.
