Configure VLAN Identifier to Zero by Default (NDIS 5.1)

Note   NDIS 5. x has been deprecated and is superseded by NDIS 6. x. For new NDIS driver development, see Network Drivers Starting with Windows Vista. For information about porting NDIS 5. x drivers to NDIS 6. x, see Porting NDIS 5.x Drivers to NDIS 6.0.

Miniport drivers should make support for VLAN identifiers (ID) a NIC property. A NIC's VLAN ID should be configured to zero by default. Because transmitting VLAN ID-marked packets will not work in all network environments and there are currently no standardized mechanisms for determining if it will, miniport drivers must configure the VLAN IDs of their NICs to zero by default. A VLAN ID set to zero indicates that no VLAN ID is present in a packet's tag header. Miniport drivers should be set up so that users can configure the NIC's VLAN ID to enable the NIC's miniport driver to:

  • Filter out incoming packets that do not belong to the identified VLAN.

  • Mark outgoing packets with the VLAN ID.
