Small Footprint Device Design Template (Windows Embedded CE 6.0)

1/6/2010

The Small Footprint Device design template provides functionality for the smallest possible Windows Embedded CE powered device.

Overview

You can use this design template to evaluate Windows Embedded CE for resource-constrained target devices with highly customized functionality.

With the Windows Embedded CE OS Design Wizard in Platform Builder, you can select the Small Footprint Device design template as a starting point for a device with the smallest possible footprint. Then, you can customize the OS design by adding specialized functionality to fit your needs.

Because of its small size, an OS design based on the Small Footprint Device design template is for target devices that do not require display capabilities.

Building a Small Footprint Device OS design without modifications is functionally the same as building a device without a design template and selecting no Catalog items.

The Catalog items that you use to configure your OS design can vary.

Small Footprint Device Catalog Items

By default, when you select the Small Footprint Device design template by using the Windows Embedded CE OS Design Wizard, the fewest possible Catalog items are included in your OS design. You can add Catalog items to your OS design, depending on your requirements, by selecting them from the Platform Builder Catalog.

After you finish with using the Windows Embedded CE OS Design Wizard, you can add Catalog items to your OS design. For more information, see Adding an Item from the Catalog.

When you select the Small Footprint Device design template, the Windows Embedded CE OS Design Wizard does not include any Catalog items in the starting point for your OS design. By default, the Windows Embedded CE OS Design Wizard includes minimal CE 6.0 functionality, such as components that belong to Coredll and nk module.

After you finish with the Windows Embedded CE OS Design Wizard, you can add Catalog items to your OS design. For more information, see Adding an Item from the Catalog.
