How to Configure the Network Adapter on the Management Server

This topic provides steps for configuring the network adapter on the management server.

To configure the network adapter on the management server for Windows Server 2003

  1. On the desktop, right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties.

  2. In the Network and Dial-up Connections window, right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Rename.

  3. Type a name for the connection, for example, Management Connection, that makes it easy to identify, and then press ENTER. This name will be referred to as <adapter name> from this point on.

  4. Right-click <adapter name>, and then click Properties.

  5. In the <adapter name>Properties dialog box, select the following components:

    Install?

    Component

    No

    Client for Microsoft Networks

    No

    Network Load Balancing

    No

    File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Network

    Yes

    Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

  6. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.

  7. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box, on the General tab, select Use the following IP address, and do the following:

    Use this

    To do this

    IP address

    Type the IP address from the table of network settings.

    Subnet mask

    Type the subnet mask from the table of network settings.

    Default gateway

    Type the default gateway from the table of network settings.

    For information about the specific IP address settings, see Configuring Network Settings for the Enterprise Deployment.

  8. Click Advanced.

  9. In the Advanced TCP/IP settings dialog box, on the WINS tab, select Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, and then click OK.

  10. If a dialog box appears that states that the computer has an empty Primary WINS address, click Yes.

  11. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box, on the General tab, type the following information so that this server can resolve the primary domain controller:

    Use this

    To do this

    Preferred DNS Server

    Type the DNS server name provided by your network administrator.

    Alternate DNS Server

    Leave blank. If your deployment includes additional domain controllers, type the IP address of the additional domain controller.

  12. Click OK.

To configure the network adapter on the management server for Windows Server 2008

  1. On the desktop, right-click Network, and then click Properties.

  2. In the Network and Sharing Center window, click Manage network connections.

  3. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Rename.

  4. Type a name for the connection, for example, Domain Connection, that makes it easy to identify, and then press ENTER. This name will be referred to as <adapter name> from this point on.

  5. Right-click <adapter name>, and then click Properties.

  6. In the <adapter name>Properties dialog box, select the following components:

    Install?

    Component

    No

    Client for Microsoft Networks

    No

    File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Network.

    Yes

    Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and/or Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)

  7. If you are using Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), perform steps 8 - 14, otherwise skip to step 15.

  8. Click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties.

  9. In the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties dialog box, on the General tab, select Use the following IP address, and do the following:

    Use this

    To do this

    IP address

    Type the IP address from the table of network settings.

    Subnet mask

    Type the subnet mask from the table of network settings.

    Default gateway

    Type the default gateway from the table of network settings.

  10. Click Advanced.

  11. In the Advanced TCP/IP settings dialog box, on the WINS tab, select Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, and then click OK.

  12. If a dialog box appears that states that the computer has an empty Primary WINS address, click Yes.

  13. Type the following information so that this domain controller can resolve the primary domain controller:

    Preferred DNS Server

    Type the DNS server name provided by your network administrator.

    Alternate DNS Server

    Leave blank. If your deployment includes additional domain controllers, type the IP address of the additional domain controller. If you are configuring secondary, or additional, domain controllers, type the IP address of the primary, or first domain controller.

  14. In the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties dialog box, click OK.

  15. If you are using Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6), perform steps 16 - 20, otherwise skip to step 21.

  16. Click Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6), and then click Properties.

  17. In the Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) dialog box, on the General tab, select Use the following IP address, and do the following:

    Use this

    To do this

    IP address

    Type the IP address from the table of network settings.

    Subnet mask

    Type the subnet mask from the table of network settings.

    Default gateway

    Type the default gateway from the table of network settings.

  18. Type the following information so that this domain controller can resolve the primary domain controller:

    Use this

    To do this

    Preferred DNS Server

    Type the DNS server name provided by your network administrator.

    Alternate DNS Server

    Leave blank. If your deployment includes additional domain controllers, type the IP address of the additional domain controller. If you are configuring secondary, or additional, domain controllers, type the IP address of the primary, or first domain controller.

  19. In the Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) Properties, click OK.

  20. In the <adapter name>Properties dialog box, click OK.

  21. Follow these steps for each network adapter.
