Visual Studio-MSDN Subscription Update: 24-Hour Key Claim Limits

Folks,

I don’t have a lot of details right now but wanted to get this information out there if you didn’t know about it already. Below is the messaging from Redmond on an impending change to MSDN and TechNet subscriptions:

We have implemented a new policy to reduce the number of product keys available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers within a 24 hour period in order to protect the program from potential abuse by a very small handful of subscribers who may attempt to use the program to obtain products keys for unauthorized usage. We have reviewed the average number of product keys claimed within that period of time and find this policy may affect less than 1% of our subscribers. Subscribers that reach their limit within the 24 hour period only need to wait until 12:01 PST to claim additional keys. The MSDN and TechNet Subscriber Portals will have online banner ads and FAQ content informing subscribers of the change beginning May 4, 2011. Our Subscription Call Centers are ready to support customers on the policy change.

Essentially, the change boils down to these three points:

  • The 24-hour key claim limit will cap the number of product keys available for download within a 24-hour period for any Server and Tools subscription program.
  • Every 24 hours a subscriber may claim another set of keys, up to the program level maximum.
  • The key claim limits are just above standard consumption rates to ensure customers with standard key consumption behavior are not negatively impacted by the policy change.

That’s all I have so far but be on the lookout for more information to come in two days on the subscriber sites.

The number of days left to expiration x 24 hour limit > number of keys to retrieve. How can I get all my keys before expiration and I lose access to retrieve keys online?
