Microsoft has revised the upgrade guidance that begins with the Windows Server 2008 SKUs. This guidance reflects the best practices that customers typically follow when they upgrade to a new server operating system.
The improved features and capabilities of Windows Server 2008 require significant changes to the upgrade process. Therefore, Microsoft provides the following guidance to help you upgrade to Windows Server 2008.
Note In this article, third-party software is defined as any software or software component, role, or function that is not included with Windows Server or that is not delivered to Windows Server when you use Windows Update. This definition also includes Microsoft utilities and applications.

We recommend that you perform a clean installation of Windows Server 2008 whenever possible.
•
There are supported upgrade paths to upgrade to Windows Server 2008. We recommend that you follow the steps in this article before you upgrade to Windows Server 2008. This includes researching the software or hardware manufacturers' support policy for upgrading to Windows Server 2008.
•
Before you upgrade to Windows Server 2008, we recommend that you remove any installed third-party software that is not supported by the software manufacturer for upgrade to Windows Server 2008. When you upgrade to Windows Server 2008 without removing the installed third-party software that is not supported, the third-party software may not function correctly.
This guidance applies to Windows Server 2003 operating systems that you want to upgrade to Windows Server 2008. Microsoft will provide technical support for the operating system, for Windows-delivered software, and for Microsoft applications to comply with your organization's technical support agreement and with Microsoft Customer Support Services.
Note Scenarios may exist in which upgrading a Windows Server component, role, or function is not supported. The Compatibility Report lists these scenarios during the Windows Server 2008 setup process.

Support policies may vary by software and hardware manufacturer. The best method to make sure that software or hardware works correctly during the upgrade process is for the manufacturer to conduct specific testing and to provide technical support and guidance directly to customers.

Preparation

Conduct a full backup of the Windows Server 2003 environment before you start the upgrade process.
•
Use the MAP Solution Accelerator tool to help assess the current inventory of installed applications on an existing network of servers.
The MAP Solution Accelerator tool is a migration readiness tool that includes hardware assessment, server virtualization candidacy recommendations, and software installation inventory for Windows Server 2008 migration and for Windows Vista migration. This tool will find only applications that were installed by using the Add or Remove Programs feature in Control Panel. We recommend that you use this tool as a reference tool and not as a comprehensive source.

Remove any third-party software that is not supported by the software manufacturer for upgrade to Windows Server 2008.
Support
If you experience a problem during the upgrade process, Microsoft Customer Service and Support (CSS) will help restore the upgraded Windows Server 2003 environment to a supported state. CSS will do this even if third-party-delivered software may be contributing to errors or to instability.
•
If a backup of the operating system is available, CSS will help you restore the environment to pre-upgrade status by following data recovery processes. There is no guarantee that any data can be recovered.
•
If no backup is available, CSS will help you recover to a supported state in the quickest way possible. For example, CSS might reinstall Windows Server 2003 and then help you upgrade to Windows Server 2008.
•
Independent software vendors (ISVs), independent hardware vendors (IHVs), and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will also be engaged, at our discretion, to try to preserve any application-specific data or operating system-specific data during the data recovery process.

New application readiness tools and certification standards
Microsoft provides freely available tools for download that help IT professionals, system integrators, and ISVs to determine application readiness for Windows Server 2008 in-house. These tools can also be leveraged throughout the life cycle of an application. Additionally, they help find applications that can use newer technologies, such as 64-bit technology.

"Ready applications" are applications that ISVs have indicated provide technical support on the Windows Server 2008 platform. These applications are listed in the Windows Server Catalog of Tested Products.
The "Works with Windows Server 2008" tool is an automated self-test that determines application compatibility. The tool helps save time during development and testing of commercial and of custom applications. The test duration is only two to four hours, and the test provides a detailed summary.
Applications that have passed "Works with Windows Server 2008" testing have had their results verified by an independent third party. Additionally, these applications are listed in the Windows Server Catalog of Tested Products.
After you obtain the "Works with Windows Server 2008" test results, you can use the "Certified for Windows Server 2008" tool and logo to discover mission-critical and line-of-business applications. You can do this by testing for compliance with Microsoft best practices for security, for availability, for reliability, and for Windows fundamentals.
The testing cycle is more rigorous than "Works with Windows Server 2008" testing. It requires three to five days.
Hardware devices and computer systems can also undergo extensive testing and can achieve "Certified for Windows Server 2008" status. Applications and hardware that demonstrate this high standard earn the "Certified for Windows Server 2008" logo. Additionally, they are represented in the Windows Server Catalog of Tested Products.

Upgrade policies

The earliest version of Windows Server that you can upgrade to Windows Server 2008 is Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1). Upgrades from Windows 2000 Server to Windows Server 2008 are not supported.
•
Cross-architecture upgrades are not supported. For example, an x86-to-x64 upgrade is not supported.
•
Cross-language upgrades are not supported.
•
Upgrades between core installations and non-core installations of Windows Server 2008 are not supported.
For example, an upgrade from a Windows Server 2008 Standard core installation to Windows Server 2008 Enterprise is not supported.
•
There are no supported upgrade paths for the Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems edition and for the Windows Web Server 2008 edition.
