Windows XP Service Pack 3 published to WSUS
Hi everyone,
Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) was made available to Windows Server Update Services this morning, classified as a service pack. It includes previously released updates and hotfixes to Windows XP and creates a new baseline for servicing. For more information about what's changed and how to deploy, see the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Overview.
One thing you may be aware of, if you happen to be managing any clients running Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System, is an incompatibility Microsoft Dynamics RMS has with Windows XP SP3. To address the problem, we’ve added a filter to help prevent Windows XP SP3 from being installed on clients managed by WSUS and will make a fix available soon (more info here).

I was able to successfully approve XP SP3, but it is failing to install on my test clients - I am not finding any events to indicate why on either my update system or the client systemsAnonymous
May 23, 2008
XP SP3 installed on several computers just fine and on others the update failed. The event logs of these computers do not provide any meaningful information. I've noticed several other updates that I was less concerned about in WSUS that failed recently (such as SQL 2005 updates). We just recently upgraded to WSUS 3.0. Any ideas?Anonymous

SP3 appears to deploy to clients OK but after the update the status for SP3 reported back to WSUS is "Not Applicable" and the last event is: Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929) Event reported at 5/8/2008 4:25 AM: Installation successful and restart required for the following update: Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929). This is the same even after several restarts. I posted this to microsoft.public.windows.server.update_services and it appears others are experiencing the same issue. I got the same results on 5 other machines with different configurations.Anonymous

Did anybody answer Peter Phillips question of June 2 about SP3 downloading to users' machines but not installing without users manually clicking the yellow shield and choosing to install SP3? I am also seeing this behavior and would like to know if a resolution exists before releasing the service pack to all my users. Thank you.Anonymous
June 11, 2008
In regard to Peter Phillips and my previous comments about users being forced to manually initiate the SP3 installation, I discovered my mistake in the following: I approved the update for installation yesterday morning and expected it to have installed by the end of the day. However, my policy "Automatic Update detection frequency" was set to 22 hours, so my clients did not even begin downloading it until this morning. With my Configure Automatic Updates policy set to "Auto download and schedule the install" at 1pm, I now see my clients installing the service pack automatically. Hope this helps others.Anonymous

Windows is designed to not install service packs without user intervention. It only installes hotfixes/security patches. Service packs have to be installed by someone clicking on the yellow shield ans walking through the prompts. I guess this behaviour is by design. PeteAnonymous
