We are pleased to announce that the v1.4 BETA has of the TFS Planning and DR Avoidance Guide has shipped.

what’s new?

We now include practical, scenario-based guidance for the implementation of Team Foundation Server (TFS) on Azure Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). We guide you through the planning and setup, based on a real-world proof-of-concept production deployment and experience from the ALM Rangers “in-the-field”.

    As one of the Rangers working on this project I'm very happy with the end result. Running TFS on Azure is very useful for a lot of customers that want an easy to setup environment without having to buy their own hardware. Because you are running full TFS installation you have full flexibility to configure TFS as you want it. So congrats to the team for shipping this release! Stay tuned for more releases of this guide like info on how to achieve an automatically scalable build farm in Azure.

    Opened my visualstudio online account this past week with only one conclusion: TFS in the cloud rocks!!!

    This was a great project to work on with the Rangers. TFS on Azure gives you the ability to reach globally distributed teams in cases where you need to integrate with on-premises resources, maintain identities of users, or cases where your requirements exceed the Visual Studio Online feature set. We hope this guide simplifies deployments of these scenarios.

    TFS on Azure "just makes sense."  I'm happy to have been a small part of this team and even more so seeing the final release.  VSO offers a great solution for many teams, but for others a custom TFS install is a necessity.  Putting TFS on Azure provides the customization capabilities of an on premise TFS installation with all of the flexibility and power of Microsoft Azure.  Kudos to the team for a great delivery.  I look forward to sharing this with my customers!

    Is there a section on costing vs on premises as I would imagine that with all the infrastructure pieces it would be quite expensive, especially as visualstudio online is effectively free with msdn subscriptions.

    @David, we discussed the option of including a costing section, but decided against going down that road. The variance of hardware, software, license, maintenance and support costs are in the category of "it depends" and we would not add value by including that as part of planning guidance. Push back if you feel we should be including a cost planning section which talks about the concepts of determining the total maintenance costs, not the actual $ values.

    This is great information, which enabled me to do my proof of concepts. We are trying to setup the same in our organization, with additional continous deployment to azure or on-premise locations.

    Hi ALM Ranger, Great Work!   I have a question, Which of these documentations can I find information about Federation enabling the TFS on Azure VM's? Will ADFS work? any links or documentation or suggestions on the same? >Vic

    Hello Team- this is good stuff. Is TFS available on Azure Public Cloud or only available on Private cloud?
