SQL Server 2008 RC0 Release Notes This Release Notes document contains information for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Release Candidate 0 (RC0) that supplements the SQL Server 2008 RC0 Readme and Books Online documentation. This document describes behaviors that apply only to this release or that are not documented in this release of Books Onl Documents White Paper: Microsoft Data Platform Development https://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/wp-sql-2008-data-development.aspx Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and the Microsoft data platform provide developers with a comprehensive programming framework in which to create data-centric solutions that target mobile devices, desktops, Web servers, and enterprise servers. This data programming environment improves developer productivity by integrating data access and management into the business logic of an application. It provides a comprehensive platform for data access and management from disparate data sources, and a scalable solution for data storage and applications. Database Encryption in SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc278098(SQL.100).aspx With the introduction of transparent data encryption (TDE) in SQL Server 2008, users now have the choice between cell-level encryption as in SQL Server 2005, full database-level encryption by using TDE, or the file-level encryption options provided by Windows. TDE is the optimal choice for bulk encryption to meet regulatory compliance or corporate data security standards. TDE works at the file level, which is similar to two Windows® features: the Encrypting File System (EFS) and BitLocker™ Drive Encryption, the new volume-level encryption introduced in Windows Vista®, both of which also encrypt data on the hard drive. TDE does not replace cell-level encryption, EFS, or BitLocker. This white paper compares TDE with these other encryption methods for application developers and database administrators. While this is not a technical, in-depth review of TDE, technical implementations are explored and a familiarity with concepts such as virtual log files and the buffer pool are assumed. The user is assumed to be familiar with cell-level encryption and cryptography in general. Implementing database encryption is covered, but not the rationale for encrypting a database. Events/Webcasts TechNet Webcast: Security Enhancements in SQL Server 2008 (Level 300) Microsoft SQL Server 2005 introduced many security enhancements, from data encryption to advanced context impersonation. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 further helps administrators protect their database with the introduction of new features such as Transparent Database Encryption, Extensible Key Management, and Auditing. In this session, we describe the new security enhancements in SQL Server 2008 and discuss how to best take advantage of them. TechNet Webcast: SQL Server 2008 (Part 1 of 3): High-Performance Data Warehousing (Level 300) Attend this session to learn how to incorporate the new features in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 to provide a high-performance data warehouse that can scale to larger number of users and growing volumes of data. In this session, we cover new technologies like partitioned table parallelism, star join query enhancements, and Grouping Sets. TechNet Webcast: SQL Server 2008 Performance and Scalability Technologies (Level 300) Microsoft SQL Server 2008 supports very large databases, enterprise-scale reporting systems, and data warehouses. It provides growing database systems with tools and features to optimize performance, scale up individual servers, and scale out very large databases. SQL Server 2008 is designed to take advantage of the latest hardware technologies to support server consolidation. Throughout this presentation, we look into SQL Server 2008 performance and scalability technologies and show how you can use these technologies to provide optimal performance and responsiveness for your large data solutions.
