The Visual Studio Gallery
For any of you who have not yet heard of the Visual Studio Gallery, it’s live today! The Visual Studio Gallery showcases free and commercial products and extensions that complement Visual Studio and Team System.
We’re excited to launch this site to help developers find tools they can use with Visual Studio, to support the growing community around Visual Studio Extensibility, and to help our partners succeed. We expect this site will also create broader awareness of the growing momentum we’re seeing in the Visual Studio Ecosystem.
I want to take this opportunity to clarify how we’re using the term Visual Studio Extensibility (VSX) – it’s not a brand, and it’s more than a feature of Visual Studio. It’s a set of capabilities, resources, and programs to help support the ecosystem around Visual Studio, which includes partners and the broader developer community.
The brief on VSX:
We talk about Visual Studio Extensibility (VSX) as an inclusive set of resources and capabilities for all Visual Studio developers. For example, you might want to install one of the extensions you find on the Visual Studio Gallery -- the easiest way to extend your development experience. Or, you might want to build a coding tool for your development team – you can use the free Visual Studio SDK to build it, and you can ship it in the Visual Studio 2008 Shell. The Visual Studio Extensibility Developer Center points to the latest SDK, the Visual Studio Shell redistributables, and how-to resources to get you started. Maybe you decide to sell that product, or want technical support for your integration. In that case, the Visual Studio Industry Partner program might be a good fit. And now, to help people find your extension, you can post it to the Visual Studio Gallery.

How do I post a Visual Studio extension to the Gallery?
The first step is to sign in with your Windows Live ID and register with the Visual Studio Gallery. The Gallery is a free service for Visual Studio developers and authors of Visual Studio extensions.
The “Add Entry” form contains a designer to help you format the description body, add images, and join multiple categories as appropriate to your product. You’ll also have access to basic page visit statistics to help you track demand.
Authors posting extensions on the Visual Studio Gallery may store their physical binaries in a variety of places and the Gallery does not force any particular store.
