My Son Alex’s Leapster 2

If you smiled when you read this title, then you’re in on the secret.  We gave our son Alex, age 6 1/2 a Leapfrog Leapster 2 for Hanukkah this year and he was very excited.  Once you put the batteries in the device and turn it on, you select a language and then create a profile by typing in your name.  This is when we hit a snag.

He typed ALEX and pressed the OK button on the screen but no matter how many times he typed it, it would not accept his name.  It didn’t even take ALEXANDER.  It took SAM, MICHAEL, ALFX, and almost any other name but the one we gave him.  I tried it a few times and gave up.

It turns out that the letter combination ALE is restricted by the word filtering software built into the device.  I found this out only by searching the online forum to find that other families were hit by this Orwellian word filtering software.  We were able to proceed by using A L E X as his name in the device.  Disaster averted.

    Interesting, we were lookign at this but the naming filter would be confusing for our child, and one I'd rather avoid.  So thats a sale they have probably just lost. also I'm of the opinion that as a parent I should have the deciding vote on the profiles name, not some arbitary 3rd party filter they have licensed.

    Of course being able to type in "A L E X" is (fortunate in this case...) another bug. What's the point of filtering if user is able to type in any word (name) with spaces in between chartacters? :) BTW Our son's name is Alek and we are thinking about Leapster too...:)

    Michael, Does the leapster 1 games work with 2? As I was thinking of getting it for my son. As for the ALE? meh.. seems a bit silly and poor coding..

    Came across the same problem. Big question..... what is offensive about the word ALE ? Does it upset some bizarre cult or other ?

    I hate leapster2... my daughter's name is aleena. she refuses to use the game and cries because it wont accept her name. I tried clicking on the link for the code and it does not work. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!
