SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 3 has released.
Dear Customers,
UPDATE (June 21 2016): This service pack is now available in the Microsoft Update Catalog .
Microsoft SQL Server Product team is pleased to announce the release of SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 3 (SP3).
As part of our continued commitment to software excellence for our customers, this upgrade is free and doesn’t require an additional service contract. Both, the Service Pack and Feature Pack updates are available for download on the Microsoft Download
Center.
SQL Server 2008 R2 SP3 contains fixes to issues that have been reported internally, through our customer feedback platforms, and Hotfix solutions provided since SQL Server
2008 R2 Service Pack 2 up to and including Cumulative Update 13. It is primarily a roll up of Cumulative Updates as it is the last Service Pack for SQL Server 2008 R2. It also includes the MS14-044 update.
We will not release Cumulative Updates for SQL Server 2008 R2 SP3.
To obtain SQL Server 2008 R2 SP3 please visit the links below:
SQL Server 2008 R2 SP3 will release through other distribution channels over the next couple of weeks.
Notes:
- We are not releasing SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Service Pack 3 refresh (i.e. slipstream bundle of Express with SP3 included). However, you can apply SP3 to SQL Server 2008 R2 Express instances running on RTM or other update version prior to SP3.
- This Service Pack will not be available on Microsoft Update. To facilitate the deployment on your side you could either use custom rules in SCCM or local publishing in WSUS as explained here.
- Slipstream technology is not available for SQL Server 2008 R2. To slipstream a SQL Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 3 please see https://blogs.msdn.com/b/petersad/archive/2011/07/13/how-to-slipstream-sql-server-2008-r2-and-a-sql-server-2008-r2-service-pack-1-sp1.aspx.
- October 16th 2014: We have discovered an issue with Report Builder 3.0 that ships with SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 3.You will find on the SQL Server Release Services blog a public message sharing details and mitigations.
Also, we are planning to release SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 4 within a few weeks.

I see no mention of the MS14-044 fix being included. ChrisAnonymous

Yes it does include the MS14-044 update. I just updated the blog post with that information. Cheers JYAnonymous

I don't see Itanium versions available for download; is SP3 only being made available for x86/x64 architectures?Anonymous

"We will not release Cumulative Updates for SQL Server 2008 R2 SP3." So is SP3 officially the last patch we will ever see from Microsoft for SQL 2008 R2?Anonymous
September 28, 2014
So even if SQL2008R2 SP3 is installed, its still effectively out of mainstream support, correct?Anonymous
September 29, 2014
I see that it isn't available via Microsoft Update, but will it be made available for WSUS?Anonymous
September 29, 2014
still would like to know what kind of affect this has on Life Cycle dates.Anonymous

A pointer to the updated lifecycle dates is provided at the end of the blog post: support2.microsoft.com/.../default.aspx Cheers JYAnonymous

To SDL, about "I don't see Itanium versions available for download; is SP3 only being made available for x86/x64 architectures?". We are not releasing IA64 packages of SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 3. For IA64 it is recommended to apply the latest update of SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2. Cheers JYAnonymous

To Brian, about "I see that it isn't available via Microsoft Update, but will it be made available for WSUS?" As far as I know about WSUS it has to get updates from Microsoft Update to distribute the updates. Since SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 3 will not be available on Microsoft Update I don't think you can use WSUS to deploy it. You could use System Center Configuration Manager (technet.microsoft.com/.../bb680701.aspx) to achieve this. Cheers JYAnonymous

This is great! thank you for packaging all the CUs post SP2 and including the security last MS14-044 just released. If SP3 is the last and assume important update, can you consider making it available on the catalog ie WSUS and Windows Update?Anonymous

Okay. Went through Iifecycle note, I didn't notice any lifecycle dates updated. From what I understood, irrespective of whether SP3 is installed or not, SQL2008R2 is out of mainstream support as on July 8 2014.Anonymous

Dinesh, from that support link, it looks like the previous Service Packs (2008R2SP2 and 2008SP3) have had their Service Pack Support End Date updated to October 13, 2015. I think that's what he means?Anonymous
October 01, 2014
From the FAQ: "As an exception, the Service Pack Support end date of SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 and SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 will be extended by 12 months to facilitate the upgrade projects of our customers" What do you mean by this?Anonymous
October 01, 2014
Wode, confused with 'Service Pack support end date' and 'mainstream support end date'. If you see the note against Service Packs, it says "Support ends 12 months after the next service pack releases or at the end of the product's support lifecycle, whichever comes first.". So the product's support lifecycle, in this case, is over by July 8 2014. That's why I think irrespective of SP2 or SP3, SQL2008R2 is out of mainstream support.Anonymous

Does the SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 3 require a reboot after installation?Anonymous
October 07, 2014
I'm confused about - "We are not releasing SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Service Pack 3 refresh." I thought the service packs could be used on Express installations. Is SP3 different? Will it work install correctly on a 2008 R2 Express installation? Thanks.Anonymous
October 07, 2014
Regarding the SP3 "refresh" for Express...maybe you mean you're not re-releasing the official Express package "with SP3 included" ?? In other words I think you're saying SP3 will install on top of Express installations, but you're just not going to release the full Express installer with SP3 included.Anonymous

@Glen about the Report Builder. Please submit this to your local Microsoft Support Representative or submit a Connect item on http://connect.microsoft.com/. If you go the route of the Connect item, please let me know its # here so that I can have the Reporting Services team look into this. Regards. Jean-Yves DevantAnonymous

Regarding the error I encountered. I have subsequently opened a support ticket with Microsoft Support (Case ID 114101011891760), who was able to reproduce my same issue. They have now forwarded this off to Product support as a probable bug. I have also submitted this to Microsoft Connect, with ID 1001935. For others experiencing this, uninstall SP3 allows Report Builder to again launch successfully, which is what Microsoft Support recommended, until this issue has been resolved.Anonymous

Regarding the Report Builder issue please refer to the following blog post: blogs.msdn.com/.../report-builder-of-sql-server-2008-r2-service-pack-3-does-not-launch.aspx. Regards Jean-Yves DevantAnonymous

I find it so inconsistent that you publish each SP differently from one another. You release SQL 2008 SP3 to WSUS why not this package as well? I feel this is sheer laziness on Microsofts part. Please reconsider and at least add this to the WSUS update catalog.Anonymous

Quick question. I have SP3 installed and today I'm wanting to add the feature "Integration Services" and it prompts for the installation media. Do I have to slipstream the install media, beforehand so that the feature is up-to-date as well? Or is it safe to install from original media?Anonymous

> This Service Pack will not be available on Microsoft Update. We just tried to pull the SP3 update via SCCM - unsuccessful. > use custom rules in SCCM has anyone else tried this, to get 2008 R2 SP3 via SCCM? any pointer/article on how to ?Anonymous

Dear Jean, Slipstream technology is not available for SQL Server 2008 R2. --Wht does this mean? My understanding is slipstream is for including SPs in same media.... To slipstream a SQL Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 3 see.... link is for SP1 . Same procure will work for SP3?Anonymous

Hi . You state under NB "•We are not releasing SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Service Pack 3 refresh." The term "REFRESH" implies (to me) an already existing SP3 for SQL Server 2008 R2 Express. However, I can only find SP2 for SQL Server 2008 R2 Express. Please can you clarify what you mean. Thanks JAnonymous

It's not clear from official support lifecycle page [1] when Mainstream support for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 3 actually ends. Is it not supported at all, as Mainstream support for SQL Server 2008 R2 is still listed as having ended on 7/8/2014? Or, has the Mainstream support been extended by 12 months to 7/8/2015 as hinted by FAQ #17 on your blog post at [2] ? FAQ 17 still is confusing though, as the question talks about SQL Server 2008 R2, but the answer only refers to Service Pack 3. Does this mean the end support date is pushed back to Service Pack 3's release date plus 12 months, giving 9/26/2015 as an end of Mainstream support date for SQL Server 2008 R2? Please clarify, and/or update the official lifecycle support page [1] to reflect the information and 'exception' referred to in the FAQ. Thanks in advance! Under "Quick Details" session of "Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 R2 Service Pack 3 (www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx)" does not include "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express" edition not applicable. But under "Properties" session of "SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 3 release information (support.microsoft.com/.../2979597)" did mention "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express" edition is applicable. So which is which?Anonymous
