Released: System Center Management Packs for SQL Server 2008-2016 (7.0.4.0)

We are happy to announce that updates to SQL Server Management Packs (2008-2016) have been released.

Please read if you have more than 1500 database files

When a SQL Server instance has about 1500 or more database files, the Data Files Discovery generates an output, which exceeds the SCOM Agent 4 MB threshold, and then the discovery fails. We added a new “Discover DB Group Seed” discovery to make the MP monitor such instances smoothly. If the data files in your environment cannot be discovered due to the 4 MB threshold, just enable the new discovery. Note that you should not enable it unless you face the problem described above.

Please see below for the issues fixed in this release. Bolded items are new fixes since the CTP release (7.0.3.0). More detailed information can be found in guides that can be downloaded from the links above.

SQL Server 2016 MP New Features and Fixes

  • Updated the "Security Configuration" section in the operations guide
  • Added the actual value of free space (% only) in the alert description of the "Transaction Log Free Space (%)" monitor
  • Added a new discovery for dealing with cases when an SQL Server instance has a vast of database files (near 1500 and more); it is disabled by default
  • Implemented caching of data received from WMI to reduce the number of requests to WMI
  • Improved the output of discoveries of Database Filegroups and Files so they do not contain unnecessary data
  • Changed ps1 data source scripts to avoid the "Pipe is being closed" error
  • Disabled Latency Disk Read/Write performance rules by default
  • Added the actual value of available disk space in DB Space monitoring alerts
  • Updated some of the display strings
  • Increased SQL Command timeout in the data source scripts up to 60 seconds (previously it was 30 seconds)

  • Added the actual value of free space (% and MB) in the alert description of the "Transaction Log Free Space (%)" monitor (SQL 2012 only)
  • Fixed issue: Agent tasks do not have any SQL MP Run as Profile mapped
  • Implemented caching of data received from WMI to reduce the number of requests to WMI
  • Changed ps1 data source scripts to avoid the "Pipe is being closed" error
  • Disabled Latency Disk Read/Write performance rules by default
  • Added the actual value of available disk space in DB Space monitoring alerts
  • Updated some of the display strings
  • Increased SQL Command timeout in the data source scripts up to 60 seconds (previously it was 30 seconds)

Dashboards MP

  • No changes introduced; increased the version number to 7.0.4.0 to comply with the current version of SQL Server management packs
