Release of SQL Server 2016 Upgrade Advisor Preview 1.4

SQL Server 2016 Upgrade Advisor Preview is a standalone tool that enables users of prior versions of SQL Server to identify what they need to do to upgrade their SQL Server database to a more recent version of SQL Server.

By running an upgrade assessment, users can pinpoint breaking changes, behavior changes and use of deprecated features.

In addition the tool can:

  • help automate upgrade schema and data motion
  • assess whether a schema would benefit from new features

You can download SQL Server 2016 Upgrade Advisor here.

What’s new in this release?

  • Increased number of compatibility rules
  • Support of more sources and destinations:
    • Possible sources: SQL Server 2005/2008/2008R2/2012/2014/2016
    • Possible destinations: SQL Server 2012/2014/2016 or Microsoft Azure SQL Database
  • Recommendations of usage of new features such as In-Memory OLTP, Columnstore index and Stretch Database

We are looking forward to reading your feedback here below.

It's awesome to see Microsoft includes SQL Server 2005 assessment in the SQL Server 2016 Upgrade Advisor Preview 1.4 prior to SQL Server 2005 End of Extended Support (12/04/2016) acknowledging the need to plan for the SQL Server 2005 upgrade that exist in many corporate globally.

Good luck finding a functioning download for SSUA 2016. All links on the Web for it are broken.

LeeC - Thanks for letting us know the links are broken. There were significant reported download center availability issues that have since been resolved. I tried it recently and confirmed it is now working properly. Can you try again and/or share with me an example of a broken link? Thanks,Erick

Hello Vlad,Looks like the migration is failed at source database backup operation at 90% completion stage with a command timeout error, I am wondering if you could provide us the size of your source database and how long it is in progress before encountering the failure?ThanksRaj

hallo RaJ,I've got the same problem in my case the source database is about 17 GB which is not our biggest. It fails on 20 percent. I had not measured the time it took before we encounterd the failure. The error message was the same as Vlad's excepts that it happends after 20 percent was processed.

Unfortunately, we set the command timeout values to very low in our SSUA migration scenarios. This has been addressed in our Data Migration Assistant (DMA), which replaced SSUA. We plan to enable Migration workflow in our upcoming DMA release and will address this issue. Please feel free to reach out to us @ dmafeedback@microsoft.com if you are willing to participate in our preview?ThanksRaj

When will the next version of the SQL Server 2016 Upgrade Advisor be released? Now that the product has been RTM for a while, we need a new version of Upgrade Advisor that's not labelled as "Preview" and incorporates feedback from users and bug fixes, so that we can start migrating our databases to SQL Server 2016. Please advise when the next version will be released!

Hi.We are migrating SQL Server 2005 to 2016 and applications run ad-hoc queries directly on the databases. In this scenario, running Data Migration Assistant on a database is useless, we need to analyze a trace file. Do you have any plans for putting this option in DMA?Regards

Did anyone installed the new version of SQL 2016 Data Migration Assistant and run it. It does not suggest me any assessment. I have to migrate from SQL 2008 R@ to SQL 2016 for a DR site. The DMA runs forever on a small sized(~1GB) database. It does not error out. It just runs forever for hours and does not give any reports. Please help!
