Adapter SDK Prerequisites

One of the commonly asked questions I get is - "Do I need to install BizTalk Server as a pre-requisite for WCF LOB Adapter SDK?". The answer is No. The Adapter SDK doesn't require BizTalk Server installed on a system, before Adapter SDK can be installed or used. If, however, you wish to use the Adapters built using Adapter SDK within a BizTalk Orchestration, the Visual Studio plug-in for BizTalk Project ([CSR]) is only installed by the Setup if the BizTalk was installed on the machine.

Make sure you have the following components installed on the system where you will install the WCF LOB Adapter SDK.

· Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0

· Microsoft Visual Studio 2005

o Note: You require this only if you want to either build custom adapters or develop solutions that use the adapters built using the WCF LOB Adapter SDK.

· Microsoft BizTalk Server 2006 R2

o Note: You require this only if you want to use the adapters within BizTalk for design-time scenarios.

WCF LOB Adapter SDK is not publicly available for download yet. The software can be evaluated under a MS Technology Adoption Program (TAP) by signing a special license agreement.  It is available for TAP program download at http://connect.microsoft.com.  You can contact btsr2tap@microsoft.com to get access to the bits on the Connect site.

This works fine with VS 2005. But I can't see "Add Adapter Service Reference" link on VS 2008 - are there any limitations using LOB Adapter with VS 2008? Thanks

The WCF LOB Adapter SDK's "Add Adapter Service Reference" link doesn't show up in VS 2008.  The team is currently working on adding support for VS 2008 in a WCF LOB Adapter SDK service pack. The release timeline of this service pack is TBD. You can find more details about this at http://blogs.msdn.com/adapters/archive/2007/12/19/add-adapter-service-reference-does-not-work-with-visual-studio-2008-help.aspx
