Guest Blog: How The Internet Has Revolutionised Recruitment

Back in the old days when you wanted to find a job you waited until Sunday and got the Sunday paper, newspaper that is. Depending upon what city you lived in it could be huge. I've seen a few that I would swear way 5 pounds of more.

Nowadays you depending upon how old you are you may not even know what I'm talking about carrying on about a Sunday paper. I spoke with a young lady a couple of weeks ago who was likely 19 or 20 who said she had never seen a Sunday paper.

Now with the advent of the internet everything has changed and nothing has changed. Nothing has changed because people still go to one source to hunt for jobs and they still have to basically look at ads for employment. However, what HAS changed is unbelievable.

Here's How Job Recruitment Has Changed Over The Last 10 Years

1. Now there are literally tons of websites that do nothing but recruit people for jobs. You go there and in your specific field there might be hundreds of openings. And if that job search site doesn't have what you're after you can find 10 more sites with just a Google search.

There are even sites now that offer job placement surveys where you fill it out and it matches you up with the best online job search company.

2. You can go to several job search sites like Wrangle.ca and ad your resume then get on their mailing lists. You'll have jobs coming to you just about every day of the week. It's pretty cool. You don't have to go searching for jobs and attempting to figure out which ones you've already seen and which ones you haven't they generally just send you the new ones.

3. One of the newer trends I saw is one recruiter now accepts video resumes to be sent to them by prospective career hunters. They keep your video resume on file and when you go after a job you can attach it to your normal digital resume. This is a very cool way for employers to get a better sense of you and who you are. Normally that would be saved strictly for the interview but here they will have an idea of what you're about before you step foot through the door.

This saves both the recruiter and the job seeker time. The employer can narrow things down faster and have to interview far fewer people. Plus they can take it home and work from their home office. The other main benefit is instead of wasting a whole day with interviews they can do them one at a time when they have a few spare minutes if that's how they like.

4. One of the coolest tools that I've seen on a job search website was the use of mapping. The job search company allows the employer to enter their location coordinates into a map app displaying where they are.

The prospective employee can then use this fully responsive themed mapping system while driving to the interview to head right straight to the companies’ location. Well, I guess that will end the late excuses of I'm new to the area and couldn't find you won't it.

The tools that employment agencies use has changed rapidly over the last ten years or so and it shows no sign of slowing down. You can make a pretty safe bet in the fact that the tools will keep evolving and launching just as fast as the internet grows.
