RoboCup tournament at the National College of Ireland (and dancing robots in general)
While scanning through the papers this weekend (over some Taiwanese High Mountain green tea that was relayed to me by the thoughtful and multilingual Eric Fish), I discovered that robots had invaded the National College of Ireland on Friday! NCI had hosted the annual RoboCup competition, which features dance, rescue and soccer challenges. Here's more info on those three challenges from the NCI site.
Was anyone at the competition? I would have loved to. Congratulations to the winning teams from Our Ladies College in Drogheda (Co Louth), St Aidan's CBS (Dublin), and Belvedere College (Dublin)!
Back in the day, I made a few simple Lego Mindstorms apps (simple, as in Braitenberg-vehicle simple) using a langauge called NQC, or Not Quite C. You can easily program Lego Mindstorms with .NET today using one of the free Visual Studio Express Edition starter kits.
Oh, to have the time to be messing with that stuff again! :)
I leave you with these dancing robots. This is a clip of Sony's QRIO dancing robots (pictured above) in action. I once showed this video to a woman who is a dance instructor and a choreographer. Nonplussed by the improbable awesomeness of Sony's technical feat, she instead critiqued the dance and its choreography. She was impressed. I was stunned. It was trippy.
