SharePoint Custom Code Review Service (MSPFE Video Blog)

Article by Tamer Maher, Senior Microsoft Premier Field Engineer

Have you ever been in a situation where custom solutions for Microsoft SharePoint are not performing well?

And you have spent countless nights with your team of developers, working on temporary fixes and responding to angry emails?

If so, you will appreciate this brilliant service offering from Microsoft Services!

I went to Redmond last week to attend the SharePoint 2013 Ignite Developer training. While there, I was lucky enough to meet up with two of my colleagues- who just happen to be the Master Trainers and developers of the SharePoint Code Review service!

The SharePoint Code Review is offered to Microsoft Premier Support customers. It’s a brilliant offering which truly magnifies your return on investment in custom code for SharePoint! What really makes the service and tools worthwhile is the proactive approach in analyzing SharePoint custom code, and the  recommendations designed to improve what could otherwise be problematic and costly custom code for SharePoint.

Here is a quick overview of the service:

The SharePoint Code Review provides a detailed look at specific components of your SharePoint custom solution’s source code and makes appropriate recommendations of any issues found that may cause support issues in the future. The primary focus of the SharePoint Code Review will concentrate on how well the code conforms to recommended best practices in the following areas: design, security, and performance. The review will identify violations of Microsoft best practices involving SharePoint List management, undisposed objects, and much more. The SharePoint Code Review can be further tailored to focus on certain feature areas such as ASP.NET, ADO.NET, Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), .NET, LINQ and other .NET developer technologies.

@Joe, check with your Partner Account Manager (PAM) as this summer we were in a pilot phase of offering this service through are Partner Consulting team who provides services to our partners.  I'm not sure of the progress at this point or even if it will become an official offering for Technical Advisory hours.  If your PAM is unsure, then have them contact me through MS email and I'll be happy to steer them in the correct direction.

A couple questions:  Is this service available for SharePoint Foundation 2013 as well as SharePoint Server 2013?  Is access to the SharePoint 2013 farm required (is the code reviewed in situ)?  Can this service also assist with JSOM and CSOM code?  Can this service be conducted if the customer is leveraging SharePoint Online (Office365)?  Is this service suitable for customers who are moving from an OnPrem SharePoint 2010 to a SharePoint Online (need suggestions on how best to leveraged the code for the new SharePoint 2013 App Model?
