Next stop, Yokohama, Japan.

Last week was TechEd Developers 2006, Barcelona, Spain - I like the way the conference has been split into a Developers conference and an ITPro Conference.

I spent Monday and part of Tuesday of this week in the Microsoft UK TVP (Thames Valley Park) office, I started at Microsoft back in 1994 working in Developer Support (supporting MASM, Fortran, C/C++, Windows SDK, MFC, driver development) based at the Reading/UK office, which was at that time based in Winnersh Triangle, not too far from the current offices - it was great to catch up with some of my old colleagues, even though I've not been there for some time it feels like 'home'.

Tuesday afternoon I'm heading for Japan for the CE 6.0 launch event, which is taking part in Yokohama. I've been to Japan a number of times and really like the place, so far I've only been to Tokyo - getting the train from the Airport to Shinjuku is easy - tomorrow is slightly different, after an eleven and a half hour flight from London/Heathrow I need to navigate the Japanese rail system to get to Yokohama, and then find my hotel...

Should be quite an adventure...

Next blog post should hopefully be from Yokohama...

So far my list of essential travel gadgets includes the following...

  1. GPS Navigation device for ALL rental vehicles (with a Starbucks POI database!)
  2. Universal Translator (was this Star Trek or something else?) - for the trips to foreign parts
  3. Appropriate power adapter for world-wide power plugs

(All of the Tōyoko trains will stop at Yokohama, so you do not need to worry about passing it.) <- the "Commuter Express" trains don't. This comes from hard-gained personal knowledge

The Narita Express is your best option. http://www.narita-airport.jp/en/access/train/index.html It's about 110 km, takes about 90 minutes, and should cost 1,890 yen. Just tell the people at the airport "Yokohama, Express" and someone should be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck.
