FINALLY: Virtual Machine Additions for Beta 2 are available

We've finally released the Microsoft Virtual Machine Additions for Windows Vista Beta 2!

You can download the additions here:
https://connect.microsoft.com

Log into the site, and sign up for the Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 Beta if you're not already in it.  In the downloads section, you'll see the Additions for Beta 2.

To install them run the MSI installer from the download site (yeah... that should be pretty obvious, actually).  The installer will ask you where you want to put the new Additions, but will default to %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Microsoft Virtual Machine Additions.

To install the Additions in your Vista VM, just mount the VMAdditionsforVistaB2.iso file in your Virtual Machine, and run the installer as normal.

Enjoy!

Update -   It's been confirmed that these additions do not work on the Beta 2 Refresh that was released recently.  We're looking into this.

I have easily installed the Virtual Machine Additions for Vista Beta 2 within a VM running on Virtual PC 2004 SP1. The performance of Windows Vista Beta 2 VM is great. Now it is big fun to run Vista Beta 2 inside a VM.

I do thank you the whole development team for this fantastic work! Very good job!!!

These VMAdditions are a great improvement.  Can we install them on Win2003 and WinXP virtual machines and see improvements as well? [I don't think that there are any improvements for other operating systems in this release of the Additions.  I'd stick with the released Additions (either the really released Additions, or the ones that ship with Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1). - mikekol]

It appears that this code doesn't work under the 5456 refresh. They install properly, but nothing appears to actually work.

Are VM Additions gone from connect.microsoft.com I can not find them? [No, the VM Additions are still up on Connect.  They're under the downloads section of the Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 beta. - mikekol]

Hmmm. I've been trying to install Vista 5472 Home Basic under VS2005 R2 SP1 and have had zero luck. The installation gets to the point where it's completing the logon and then won't go past the "Personalizing Themes" screen. Everything's still running, and the CPU is not pegged, but I can't get past that stage. Of course, one can't install the VM Additions util one is actually able to log on!

    Any suggestions?

I had the same problem mentioned by Ed Bott I hit right alt+delete and logged off and the personalization finished up and everything works fine now.

BTW, this doesn't enable aero glass huh? [That's correct.  Glass doesn't work in a VM because the emulated graphics card doesn't meet the minimum requirements.  You can read more about that over at this post:  http://blogs.msdn.com/mikekol/archive/2006/02/22/537325.aspx - mikekol]
