Tips for moving your life to a new Windows Mobile device
If you're like us who have more than one device, one of the hardest things to do is to move to a new device, especially when you have so many applications installed and customizations done to the phone. Here's what I do in order to reduce the downtime when moving from device to device.
Keep all applications/data on your Storage Card
Ensure that you install every application on a storage card and configure all applications to utilize the storage card as a working folder or storage space for data. You'll find out that most applications don't require you to reinstall them and will run fine if you execute them again. Some exception that I've come across, applications like NewsBreak (which requires you to re-register), or Virtual Earth Mobile (reinstall).
I also keep all original installation cab files on my storage card, for cases like those above, all you need to do is to reinstall them and you're good to go.
Doing this also simplified my move from Typhoon/Wizard (Mini SD) to the new devices which takes MicroSDs. All I have to do is to copy the files from one SD card to the other using a PC.
Backup your Start Menu & Other shortcut folders
Make a backup of your shortcuts from "\windows\start menu" onto your PC, so all you need to do when you move your storage card to the new device, is to recopy all the shortcuts back to the original folder and it will reappear in your menu of applications.
Also, in Vista, make sure you uncheck "Hide all System or Protected files" option under Folder Options. So that you will copy all hidden/system files. You can check it back after you're done with the copying.
Backup your Home folder
For those of you who like to customize homescreens, you should copy all your custom themes from \windows\application data\home and replace them on the new device. Typical files you'd need to copy are JPG, XML files and custom plug-in folders.
Anyone have anymore tips for ensuring a smooth change from device to device?
