Mobility LOB Workshop Questions & Answers
We've just completed the a Train-the-trainer hands-on workshop for Accenture and a bunch of internal Microsoft Consulting Services (MCS) and Certified Partner for Learning Solutions (CPLS) trainers in Singapore. During the Tech Discussion we received many questions and have answered them on the spot, but I'd like to publish them again here in case anyone else is interested.
The questions and answers are inline:
· List of files to add to the exception list of a firewall ?
-
-
- A: wcesmgr.exe, wcescomm.exe, rapimanager.exe
-
· List of ports to open?
-
-
- A: Inbound 990, 5678, 5721, 26675
- Outbound 5679
-
· Are there any issues with Vista and WM 5.0?
-
-
- No at all, Vista will sync seamlessly with WM 5.0 even better when WMDC is released (already available as of this post. Get Windows Mobile Device Center 6)
-
· Registry keys for tweak on debugging or other processes
-
-
- During the workshop we showed some registry key settings to do specific things on debugging (specifically to attach to a running process for debugging). The question was what other registry keys exists to do things like that or is there a place where we can find a list of keys.
- A full "list" of registry keys isn't available and that one that we showed is an undocumented feature.
-
· Links of Windows Mobile Developer Center and application compatibility page.
· Upgrade utilities for applications from WM5.0 to the next release of Windows Mobile
-
-
- A: No tools required. Should work fine.
-
· Authentication strategies without using AD
-
-
- If an organization doesn't have Active Directory (AD), they should then roll their own authentication. Windows Mobile applications will still be able to call their authentication engine.
-
· Secure storage of passwords within the Mobile Device
-
-
- We recommended the same strategy of the Password Authentication Block from the Mobile Client Software Factory.
-
· Are there any case studies for Healthcare?
-
-
- Plenty at case studies at https://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/business/success/healthcare.mspx
-
· Does Multithreading work in Compact Framework?
-
-
- Yeah absolutely and excellent thing to do. It ensures that you application continues to run instead of locking up when it's processing. Here's a good article: https://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms838019.aspx
-
· Managing the availability of wireless connectivity (wifi, gprs, etc)
-
-
- A good practice could be to use the Connection Monitor from the Mobile Client Software Factory or apply the same strategy/concepts.
-
· Is WCF supported in .Net CF
-
-
- A: Yes. A limited WCF will be supported in .NETCF 3.5.
- Why 3.5? to be in line with the desktop .NET Framework 3.5.
-
Suggestions and feedback:
- Bigger slides on the attendee manual (2 slides / page instead of notes page)
- Build a real-world application throughout the course of the entire workshop instead of rushing it at the end.
- Workshop should be longer
- Good balance between concepts and hands on.
- Tech Discussion using the whiteboard was the most invaluable time spent.
- Attendees didn't like the Mobile Composite UI Application Block (Mobile CAB). more on this later.
