Distinguishing between concepts in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012: manage vs. maintain

In this blog entry we take a closer look at how we apply the concepts named manage and maintain in Microsoft Dynamics AX.

How we apply the term manage

We apply the term manage:

  • When we refer to the development, analysis, implementation, or deprecation of processes or programs.
  • When we refer to supervisory tasks.
  • When we refer to the relationship activities between people and organizations.

We apply the term manager to name the role of a person who develops, designs, or administers internal control policies, rules, and procedures.

Example sentences

  • Example 1: A. Datum Corporation offers tools and resources to help its employees manage their careers and professional development.

How we apply the term maintain

We apply the term maintain when we refer to setting up data or modifying data that supports a job function or a work activity. For example, after a person designs or develops a policy, another person will use Microsoft Dynamics AX to maintain that policy over the life cycle of that policy.

  • Example 2: The accounting manager maintains the chart of accounts for the ledger.
