Creating scalable web apps with the Service Gateway

Earlier this year we released the Service Gateway, a tool that simplifies the process of building an internet-ready web site or mobile service.

If this is your first time reading about Service Gateway then check out my initial post from a few months ago. The nut of it is that with Service Gateway you can have an Internet scale, highly available services up and running in under an hour.

The simplicity that Service Gateway provides has already attracted the attention of companies such as GE Healthcare and Invensys. Now James Baker and the rest of the guys who built the Service Gateway have been working on some updates, including:

  • Automatic updates for both the Gateway and Management Console
  • Optimization for UrlRewrite RegExp expressions to reduce latency overhead
  • Additional redirection rules and enhanced configuration for all rules
  • Added support for completing proxy HTTPS requests with self-signed or untrusted certificates
  • Support manual rewrite rules
  • Support for redirection in addition to rewriting
  • Added support to run in Azure China environment
  • Fixed a variety of reported bugs

As a matter of fact, the Relecloud app that we demonstrated at Build last spring was built using the Service Gateway, and it’s currently being used by customers to help simplify the process of building apps for the Web, for mobile and for off-line experiences.
